Where is the yarn from? Are any animals harmed? All our yarns are ethically sourced. The Blue Faced Leicester wool is sourced from small farms across the UK, where it is scoured then Superwash treated. Merino fibers are from various sources in Peru, Argentina, and Uruguay– not Australia (to avoid mulesing concerns)– and our provider certifies that none of our merino is sourced from farms practicing mulesing.
What do you use to dye your yarn? All our yarn is hand-dyed in our home studio/garage using professional acid dyes. The term “acid dye” means acid is used to lower the PH of the water & the combination of hot water and acid permanently fixes color to the yarn. We use either vinegar or food-grade citric acid, depending on the fiber. We strive to minimize impact of our dye processes with a careful eye to minimize water consumption & potential impacts to the environment by the dyeing process.
How should I care for my projects made with Peninsula Yarn? We recommend hand washing all items in cool water with a gentle detergent and laying flat to dry. Superwash wools may be washed in a machine, but we still recommend hand-wash when possible (yarns are distinguished as Superwash or Non-Superwash on the website). ALWAYS air dry!
